Seattle in June - HELP - What Peaks to Grab on Hiking Trip?

by sopwith21 » Wed Feb 04, 2015 3:46 pm

While visiting Seattle in early June, we would like to extend our stay and spend 3 days/2 nights in the wilderness grabbing peaks. We are interested in something that can be done in hiking boots, as most of our experience is from the Rockies and Appalachians. Does anyone have any suggestions on a good outing that's not too far from Seattle? Thanks!

Are you looking for non-technical peaks? What gear will you have? Rock gear, ice axe, crampons? How long of a drive are you willing to make?

We are looking for non-technical peaks. We have access to ice axe & crampons but are not experienced in using them - hence the hiking boots reference.

I'd be comfortable using axe/crampons on a fairly mild peak, but I want to be sure to live within my experience level. Again, most of our hiking/climbing has been in the Rockies and Appalachians, so keep that in mind. Thank you for your thoughts!

Mt Daniel would be a nice, scenic climb/hike not too far from Seattle. http://www.summitpost.org/mount-daniel/150409

Another option would be the Goat Rocks area, with a number of suitable climbs. http://www.summitpost.org/goat-rocks-wa/170956

Great ideas, many thanks.

Mt. Daniel seems especially attractive. Are crampons/axe generally required to ascend the glacier? The glacier looks like an easy hike without too steep an ascent - is that so, or are the pictures deceiving?

Thanks again, both of these options look like great fun.

Ice axe and the skill to use it definitely, crampons maybe depending upon the snow conditions.
