Honestly, if I was to do a ski trip to South America, I think I'd rather hit up the volcanoes in the Chilean Lake District. Lots of peaks to do and probably much better snow, although I think the best time to go is already past or nearly so.

I think you'd ski the volcanoes in Ecuador just to do them...

We were on Solimana a week ago, very little snow except on the glacier itself, which was thankfully easy to walk on. The penitentes were very minor most of the time. The normal route from the glacier to the summit had no snow, only a thin layer of ice over rocks. There is a possible rock climbing route on the south ridge but we didn't check it out. Hope to get a trip report posted soon, but forgot my photos back in Cotahuasi. In the meantime you can check my previous report, Solimana recon trip, if interested, it has photos.
