Hi,

I will probably be out in Zurich for a couple of days (with car) in September. Any suggestion on a nice peak to bag. Preferrably walk-up with axe/crampons if needed that can easily be done in a day.

Any info is greatly apprieciated!

The highest and nearest peak to Zürich in SP is Rigi

How about Glaernisch - see the page about the highest peak of this massif - Vrenelisgaertli

Fred, a friend and I did Schächentaler Windgällenas a day climb from Zürich using only public transportation. It was fun and a good outing.

Awesome! Thx for the suggestions. I was first looking into the Matterhorn area but that's too far of a drive. I will have a car but have to drive on a Monday morning to my destination from Zurich. Consequentely it can't be too far.

Trailhead is Vorauen (850m) at the western end of the Kloentaler See lake. There is a public road to there from Glarus. Driving from Zuerich app. 1 h 20'. So for a daytrip you have to do more than 2000m (almost 6800 ft). I haven't been there myself yet so I cannot tell more than is already on the SP page (please visit the link at the bottom, there's a map).
I think that this should be possible doing alone. The problem of your intention is, that most peaks that require ice axe and crampons also require a roped team because of crevasses danger.

It seems too much hard for a day Mathias. Schächentaler Windgällen is a better aim in my opinion. Or other lower peaks as those said... BTW, why not trying Pilatus starting at Brunni or Eigental:?:

Thx Mathias for the info! 6800 feet in a day is doable but maybe a bit much. Mabye I'll shoot for Schächentaler Windgällen. Not sure if you need a rope there... We'll be 2 people and we're used to using ice axe/crampons but haven't done rope travel yet as we didn't have to deal with crevasses...

The SE Ridge on Schächentaler Windgällen has at least one rather exposed place that is a good solid Class 4. If you are not an experienced rock climber, this spot could be dangerous without a rope.

Hmm, any way to get around it or is there a different route up the mountain. Is the rock pretty solid with good grip? I will definitely have some more class 3 experience by the time I go. Just not sure how much different class 4 is...

Well if Glaernisch is too hard - than stay away from the recommded route to Toedi! I needed 3 days for this route and Porta da Gliems notch is very tricky / dangerous in September.
For a daytrip on a nice glacier mountain please check out Clariden from Klausen pass.
