According to the new (Slovak) Tatra National Park regulations, as of 2024 you can legally climb without a guide also routes at UIAA grade I or II providing that you have:
- proof of completing a relevant climbing/mountaineering course,
- proof of identity,
- a valid membership card of an association affiliated with the UIAA,
- appropriate gear,
- knowledge of the route,
- registered your climb online.
(For more difficult routes you don't need the first item listed above.)

I have climbed in the Tatras with wonderful JAMES members and joined back in the 90's. I had the JAMES logo tattooed on my chest to the delight of my JAMES friends. Gaza Haak, Kazo Linek, Zolo Demjan, Maros Sajnoha, Martin Heuger and others. It was always great fun and epic adventure. The only other tattoo I have is the USA Bomb Squad "wings" on my posterior, customary for the American police bomb techs. Apparently, it helps identify your body if you blow yourself up...Both are statements of proud service and endeavors with lots of pivo!
Salute to JAMES
