Day hike from Munich

I am going to be in Munich in early October and I wanted to do a hike as a day trip. Are there any recommendations for a day hike that is accessible by train from Munich. I am an avid hiker, so I can handle a full day of hiking.

A few years ago when I was in Munich I went by train to Garmisch-Partenkirchen to 1-day excursion. There are lots of possibilities for hiking. It is a good idea to buy a 1-day train ticket for Bavaria. Here is the website of the German railways:
