Hello ,
I have a question regarding hiking mountains .
Me and some friends are thinking of hiking a mountain next year along with a few days of backpacking.
I have hiked mountain once years ago, and can't remember the name , but want to do it again. Getting older and want to do it while I can. Never done backpacking .
The other guys have never hiked a mountain but do a lot of backpacking .
Question , would Windom be a good one for beginners, or if you can think of one's that would be.
We are looking in the San Juan area.
What equipment if any would we need ?
Any info would be greatly appreciated

I would say that it is a pretty good one for beginners.

My son and I did it when he was four years old, so it isn't really hard. My dad came along too. Here is the trip report:

As far as trails around Windom for backpacking, do you know of any? We plan to do the mountain the first or second day, then do some backpacking for 2 or 3 days after that.

You could go over Columbine Pass or even make a long loop from Elk Park.

ok, cool, I will pass this on to my friends and hopefully we can get it planned and do this next year .

Scott or anyone , we are planning on going here next Sept. But are not wanting it to be crowded, is this area a tourist trap, will there be alot of people climbing etc? If so, can you recommend any other areas where we could hike the summit and also do some backpacking that wouldnt be so touristy , busy?

Weekends in September will still be crowded; week days not as much.

Cool, we will more than likely go during the week, I work 12 hour shifts , so one week I can take 2 days off and have 7 days off, so during the week will work perfect. Thanks so much Scott

Scott, another question has come up.
Trails to Windom from the train drop off, what are the trail names if any from the train to Windom, and what are the trails that take you up to the summit? Is there a common trail that everyone takes or is it just however you can find a way to get to the summit ?
