How is the skiing?

Hi, I am thinking of going skiing in Colorado in January. How is the snow this year? I have seen from reports that generally snow bases are low and its quite cold but is it that bad?

I am am going with a few non skiers among us skiers so I was considering the main resorts. Any reccomendations in regards to conditions? (I have been to the most common, Vail, Beaver Creek, Keystone and Breckenridge)

Should I go to another state? Whats the best bet so far this year?

thanks in advance.

Hi, sneaky,

Colorado's a big state and there are lots of different conditions overall. So far the west slope is rocking and the front range is kind of pathetic.

Frankly I'd head to Crested Butte. It's a great town, lots of things for non-skiers to do, some of the best skiing in CO right now. It's also close enough to Telluride that a day trip there isn't going to be an epic. And if you're of a mind to try something off-piste there are lots of options in that region as well. Pretty country, to boot.

And yes, it's going to be cold. But wait 1/2 hour and the weather will change.

Looks like things are about to improve. Just in time.

Will this big Thursday Friday dump come through to the Front Range?

I was just in CB this past weekend and the coverage there is 'ok', but not great. The real steep stuff isn't open yet and since they've not had any good fresh snow for a while a lot of the runs were a bit on the icy side.

They need SNOW. On the bright side, as we were leaving on MLK day they were predicing a few inches of new snow for the week.

Hi, I put off my trip for the end of Feb. or even March.

This seems like a really bad year for the Colorado Resorts. Its a shame since they are some of the best anywhere.

I mean, by the end of this week Whistler will probably have gotten 400 inches of snow for the season while most Co. resorts are around 100-150 at the most. That is a huge difference.

I am betting that in the next 3-4 weeks Co. Resorts should get 4-5 feet of snow or more so by the ned of Feb. most should be open 100%

I'm hearing Telluride is getting blasted right now. The Central part is living off of Man Made.

Ok, we're switching over to Telluride. 24 - 36 inches!! The stuff dreams are made of!!

Probably should also watch out for "snow snakes" (branches hidden in the snow).

Up at Breckenridge on Friday. Snow wasn't bad but the base sucks for this time of year. Lots of rocks hidden under a couple inches of new snow although, thanks to me, some of those rocks around Whale's Tail and George's Thumb have a nice coating of p-tex covering them.

The snow's been pretty crappy along the Front Range and Central Mountains this year. I was at Vail this past Sunday, 1/31, and the snow was better than it has been, but its still pretty thin in places. We need a lot more snow up there.
