Thanks Yury, I'm going to Elbert on May 26th and I won't be bring snowshoes or any traction, seems regular hiking boots will do.

Depends on your vehicle. If you have 4WD then you can drive to timberline with many camping opportunities along the road. Else, theirs a FS campground a few miles up the Chalk Creek road.

I don't think there is any camping allowed down lower on the road (only 10k and up), though as mentioned you can drive up the road to treeline and things open up. Alternatively Raspberry Gulch and Brown Creek/Little Brown Creek are just a few miles south of Princeton on easy dirt roads and there is tons of free dispersed camping there.
