I am going to be coming out to Colorado to do some hiking over Memorial Day and have a few things on my list. Definitely planning for Elbert for the high-point and Pike's because, well, it is obligatory. Also going to be heading to Black Rock Canyon of the Gunnison, Mesa Verde and the Sand Dunes but looking for some local suggestions. I am going to fly in on a Monday, grab a rental car and essentially live out of my backpack for a couple weeks hiking and camping my way through the state. I'm looking both for longer hikes as well as shorter places to oooh and ahhh over on my rest days. Depending on conditions and whim I may head into Wyoming or Utah a bit too.

I'm pretty comfortable hiking snow/ice and have the right gear, gps, transponder, etc... but am also going to be solo so not looking to take any major risks.

I've read a lot of the guides, maps and posts on the subject already but figured I'd throw this out there for some personal opinions as well.
