i'm thinking about making a day snowshoeing trip on sunday, possibly driving out saturday night. i live in the east bay area and wanted to know if anyone has any suggestions as i've done all of my snowshoeing much further up north. i'd be willing to drive 4 hours tops.

The M1 (Elk Mtn RD)which goes over Elk Mountain from Upper Lake is a great road.
However, it can be super muddy (4X4) or really deep snow (4X4).
The other approach is from Potter Valley.
This road (Elk Mountain RD)stays low - below snowline - and isn't nearly as muddy, but does have way more potholes than Elk Mtn Rd.

If it hasn't rained in a while, any vehicle can make it to Boardman Ridge on Hull.
But if it's muddy, a 4X4 is really nice to have.

Yeah, I know it sounds confusing. But if you have a Northern California Atlas & Gazetteer...

page 74 -Potter Valley Route.

take East Side Potter Valley Rd from the 20 >Eel River Rd>Van Arsdale Res.
(stay right on the downhill)
Cross the bridge over the Eel River and take Elk Mountain Rd on the north side of the river,
over 'The Slides' area. Watch out for free-range horses here.
You will soon be at the Soda Creek Store. Turn left.

page 75 - Elk Mountain Route.

Take Elk Mtn Rd from the 20
(also known as the M1 - all the way to Boardman Ridge/the summit of Hull and beyond)
from Upper Lake.
Go up all 33 swithcbacks - takes 15 minutes- to the summit of Elk Mountain.
Keep going down the other side until you hit Eel River Rd. Go straight(right).
You will soon be at the Soda Creek Store. Go straight. Potter Valley is to your left.

I wanna see a TR if you go!
