I've never taken avalanche equipment up Shasta this time of year, nor do I know anyone else personally who has.

But you'll have to make your own decision for that. Agree that rockfall and other dangers are more pressing this time of year.

the snow is very well settled. Low avy danger on all aspects. But make your own decisions and take responsibility for them.

I think not having avalanche gear is acceptable this time of the year. A helmet is probably more important :)

Agreed with the previous replies on current summer conditions... and I thought somebody should probably get back up on the following soapbox for a minute:

During periods of uncertain avalanche hazard, just "carrying a beacon" will likely serve no other purpose than providing a false sense of security, and helping subsequent rescuers to locate the bodies. Very important for all individuals in a party to have had sufficient practice with the specific unit they are carrying as well as basic avalanche rescue (search techniques, probing, shoveling, etc). Even more important is for the party to practice safe travel techniques and have one or more individuals well-versed in avalanche hazard assessment.

Off soapbox... :)

Have fun and be safe!

If you're taking well-traveled routes - AV, WFG, Casaval..... there's not much need for avi gear right now. Would the whole group have them, and probes AND training? :/
Wear a helmet and keep an eye up is the best advice you can get right now.
