The next one will be a long way off - 2014. The reason for the abnormally long interval lies in the 5% degree tilt of the Moon's orbit, in relation to the plane of the Earth and Sun, and additional, complex orbital mechanics that come into play during this time - that I have little chance of fathoming.

Looks like you had the same problem I had - the sun rising and the moon setting. At least the first half of the 'show' was pretty dramatic. Got up early before sunrise and went for a jog (4:30AM), all the time watching the shadow creep over the moon. Got home and was able to simply put a lawn chair on the driveway and watch the rest of it, after putting on a heavy jacket and pants to combat the 36 degree air temp! The neighbor thought I was a looney until I told him why I was out there like that. Pretty cool!
