I spent 3 days at the Vermillion Valley Resort in early August, coincidentally right after it had been taken over by new Owners. I enjoyed being around the thru hikers stopping there for re-supply. It reminded me of when I hiked the JMT years ago. Now, after one month of operation, the Resort apparently has to close. That's tough for the new Owners, but what about the thru hikers counting on picking up supplies? And are those hikers being forced to leave the National Forest, which would be a logistical challenge?

This is off-topic, but I didn't realize the VVR had new owners... guess the sale went through!

This doesn't help thru hikers planning on using Vermilion but it was interesting from a press release here in the E. Sierra:

The Inyo National Forest understands that
people have trips planned and vehicles staged.
This is not an emergency evacuation, but a
closure. People should make an expedient,
orderly, and safe completion of their hikes.
However, people who are planning hikes and
backpacks and are aware that they will enter a
closed area should change those plans.

Resupply requests are handled on a case-by-
case basis.

That's interesting information, however not too many thru hikers in the Inyo NF.

I think it may have been a realization that an individual providing a resupply to a JMT thru hiker would need to originate the trip from the Inyo National Forest from places like South Lake/Bishop Pass and similar.

I myself used Bishop Pass for a re-supply when I hiked the JMT, so it does happen. However, I just thought it a bit ironic that the Inyo NF, which hosts maybe 5% of thru hikers, has a policy for re-supply whereas the Sierra NF which hosts 100% of all thru hikers has no policy for re-supply (at least that is posted on their internet site).
