I'm amazed by folks who, when something like this shakedown comes along, respond with a kneejerk reaction to raise fees and taxes.

This game has been played for a long time. The government makes a bunch of fat deals with it's cronies while times are good. Then suddenly they are out of (our) money, so they threaten us with things like closing parks because they figure we'll just pony it up like the sheep they think we are.

Want to save a few billion? Scratch the "high speed" rail line project from SF to LA. You know, the "high speed" train which will have to cross Tehachapi Pass (max 15 mph, shared with freight trains)) and follow the old existing right of way along highway 14 from Palmdale to LA (maybe 35mph also shared with freight.)

Whatever happenned to "Question Authority?"

I know, this is an informational thread. Could not help myself. Too much bs. Measured by revenue taken in, the CA govt. has grown by over 40% since Arnold came in. The madness has to stop.

A new football stadium in L.A. is a much better use of funds than our state parks system.

In Nevada, we have put away 3 billion in land sales money from BLM, as result of a unique 1998 act pushed through by Harry Reid. I thought, "our park lands will greatly benefit!" since the money was supposed to be used for improving state and federal parks.

Flash forward... the money has been used to construct elaborate parking areas for equestrian parks that nobody uses, a new visitor center at red rock to replace the perfectly good one, a 2 million boardwalk over a field, 3 million per half-mile for city trails (in urban areas), and a 63-million shooting range. The crappy trails remain crappy and eroding. Most funds seem to have gone for construction and civil-engineering-intensive, ludicrous projects. The comapnies performing the construction are never named. Here's my prediction: they are all heavy contributors to Harry Reid.

If the citizens of Nevada have a collective brain they will give Harry Reid his walking papers next year. So far the numbers look good.

This is a local example of waste: The last fires (2005) around Moorpark, burned a section of the freeway wall, about 100 yards worth so when the caltrans crew got out there to repair it, somehow our state crews found enuf $$$$$$$$$ to remove and replace 22 miles of it. They worked on this deal for like 9 mo. I could not believe it!

Geez dude, you sure like to jump to these conclusions about folks who see prop 13's legacy a little differently than you. Not all of it's opponents are state employed fat-cats waiting to cash in a huge pension. Sounds like you may have a pretty insular social circle where you don't rub elbows with folks from different walks. THAT is the dark side to our beautiful California culture.

Protecting home owners sounds good to say, feels good to think about and sure gets people's attention. However, Prop 13 is not that simple. To represent it as such is a disservice (pun fully intended).

-Commercial properties are given the same protection as residential.
-2/3 cluster f@ck requirement for new taxes.
-California relies upon sales and income tax to generate revenues(can you see how that screws us right now?)
-California ranks 38th in property taxes.

But hey, consider this: we (California tax payers) are subsidizing your low property taxes. That's got to feel good.

If the ca government had it's way with us..... they would wish us to become Slaves to the government..... They would take every cent so they could pay for all the BS they wish for.

I find it unbelievable that we pay like 50-70% in taxes and still the government needs more.

And I hang around with lots of state workers, and they agree with me.
