Is it safe to say Tioga pass is closed for the season?

Tahoe is too low, but look at theKirkwood forecast: 28 to 36 inches above 9500 feet. If it really dumps that much I wouldn't be surprised if Tioga Pass was closed for the season.
Shasta sounds even better: 2 to 5 feet of fresh snow at higher elevations!

What is the earliest the pass has shut down? We're pretty early, but I would think there have been some anomalies.

It closed on 9/4 in 1943 & 1944, but the war years had shortened seasons. Since 1948, when it closed 9/4, the earliest has been 10/17, in 2004.

Mammoth's web site now says they're opening this Friday, their second earliest opening ever. Now I kinda wish I had bought a season ticket last spring...

In my post above, expected to hear usual post storm news stories about some that were oblivious to forecasts and got caught up in the backcountry. And hear we go:

Note someone already posted other info on the "3 missing.." thread. What I'm curious to find out is how they managed to decide to take a week long trip at high elevations at a time of year when it is foolish not to look at long range weather forecasts?

They were planning on exiting Monday, before the storm.
