Hmm. Ya know, Mt. Shasta is only 4.5 hours north of you .. Shasta Mountain Guides runs a one-day class that teaches basic mountaineering which could come in handy (and could save your life).

Or, you could rely on a bunch of dorks from an internet message board :lol:

Heck, I don't tend to learn all that much from classes. They just throw too much at you at once. I learn a lot better by actually doing stuff. At least I'm not like those people that were in the same expedition as Jon Krakauer in "Into Thin Air". He mentions they some of them didn't know how to put on their crampons either!

That's what they have you do in the "class" -- they get you onto a snow slope, practicing skills. Like how to self arrest a fall head-first and how to walk in balance with axe & crampons and how to glissade without breaking your ankle(s).

Way to go Squish. Glad you guys had a fun, successful, and most of all safe day. Now that you have your new beacon dohickey to play with lemme know -- I'll go practice burials w/you any time. :wink:
