Here's an LA Times article about the incident:
http://articles.latimes.com/1995-06-15/ ... ss-opening

And, from the Yosemite website:

"The Barry Hance Memorial Award was established in honor of the Yosemite National Park maintenance worker killed in an avalanche while plowing the Tioga Pass Road on June 13, 1995. The award is designed to celebrate Yosemite employees that demonstrate exceptional ethics, attitude, and concern for their fellow employees and the park. "

Storm this weekend. Hard to say. At this rate I'm going with Dave K. In '98 after the big el nino that year the pass didn't open until 4th of July weekend when the high country was still deep in white. And they did it partly because of holiday pressure. This el nino hasn't been nearly as strong. Hope I'm wrong!

As of 29-April -

Tioga plowing operations were halted due to wet slab avalanche activity at the South Fork avalanche zone. With freezing temperatures forecast, plowing ops are expected to resume today.
