Split Mountain conditions?

Anyone got info for Split Mountain?

road to trailhead clear of snow?

How far up is the trail clear of snow?

Is the miserable talus all covered up with a nice firm smooth layer of snow?

Anyone else heading up that way memorial day weekend?

Or are there any other decent 13-14ers between lone pine and big pine that might be worth doing with the current snow conditions this weekend? Looking for moderate class 2, or low class 3. Comfortable on snow. We are going Saturday through Monday.

Thoughts anyone?

Thanks,
Thatcher

Hi, just got back from an attempt on Split. The road to the trailhead is in good shape--be careful of cows. No significant snow until ~10K'. My friend wore trail runners until the big tree. It snowed off and on all weekend at Red Lake and above, with high winds at times. We made it to 12,700' but turned back due to potential whiteout conditions and time constraints. It was clearing nicely on Monday morning when we hiked out. I'll try and post a link to my photos in the next day or two.

just a reminder to check the weather...I believe there's currently a winter storm warning in effect, although I think it ends Friday. Could be fresh snow though.

how about avalanche danger? I hadn't considered it. I'm not typically an early season climber. Is the current snow up there consolidated?

The storm is supposed to be gone by then. Hopefully it will be.

Thatcher~We were doing the North Ridge/Northwest Slope. I'm no avy expert but the final chute above the bowl felt a little sketchy. The newer snow wasn't bonded well to the consolidated base and we started several small slabs to slide. Thanks for the invite, but it looks like it will be July before I get back to Split. Be careful out there!
