Does anyone have any info on this rock? I've heard there is possibly a class 3 route?

Dingus Milktoast wrote:Yes the descent route is class three. SE Ridge, south ridge, something like that. I've been down it, not up. Approach from Minarets Rd, hike down trail to footbridge and across San Joaquin river in vicinity of GRanite creek. Up the other side, then cross country once you strike the ridge. Work your way to toward the left side of the dome as you face west.

There are some good climbing routes on that dome though most of them are approaching 40 years old now (along with their 1/4 inch split shaft protection bolts). We did the East Face, III, 5.9 - a great route.

You sent me a PM some time ago, I thought that to be the case. Thanks!

I finally finished my report on Balloon Dome from my climb in June. Yes, there is a class three route on the south side. I guess it will be interesting to see what this area looks like now, the Creek Fire having incinerated the whole area since my visit. :(

I'm trying to share the information here, but it says I'm "not yet allowed to post URLs," so I guess you'll have to wait until I'm a big boy and "allowed" to post URLs.
Or go to Hiking metal maniac dot blogspot dot com and look for "Balloon Dome" to read the description of the hike.
