Is the road snowed closed/snowed in yet? Anyone know what the snow level is in the White Mountains?

Thanks!
Jason

State Route 168 is usually plowed, but White Mountain Road is not plowed.

Looks like most of the snow is blown off the Whites. There may be some drifting along the road, but I can't see that from my vantage point.

A little bit more snow has fallen than was forecast for this weekend in Mono County with a few inches of "Partly Cloudy" here in Crowley. Mammoth has over a foot of new snow. Don't know how much the Whites got, but things are probably more wintery than they were yesterday.

More snow is in the forecast for Turkey Day, so plan accordingly.

So with Tioga pass ope (and I'm in the Bay Area), i'm thinking of somewhere like White Mountain Peak next weekend. I called through to the ranger and they said the road to the trailhead is all clear. Anyone been up there recently?

I'm also thinking of heading over there this week-end. I found a trail report from sometime in January:

Seems like it's good to go...

It looks like a mountain bike would be more fun than hiking .

I did go up that weekend and there indeed was someone on a mountain bike and it looked like a lot of fun and the fast way to do it. He did ditch the bike a few hundred ft shy of the summit. Maybe next time I will bike too

Hoping the road up is still open...

More precisely, I need to get as far as the intersection with the Silver Canyon turnoff.

Any current info?

Is it safe to say there's a pretty good chance you can get that high all year long?

Thanks.

The forest service website says the road is closed at the gate at Sierra View, a few miles south of Schulman Grove. Snow often drifts in on the steep, north-facing slopes just beyond the gate. Likely the gate will remain closed until the road is plowed in the spring.

Thanks for the info.

Sounds like a change of plan is required...

Silver Canyon is a good idea. Don't know if it'll work, but a good idea nevertheless. It's a fun drive either way.

If you've got the right vehicle, you could try driving up Silver Canyon itself, but I imagine the snow gate is closed on that as well. Anyone know if it is?

If the other gates are closed there is a strong strong chance that the gate at the top or bottom of the switchbacks in Silver is closed. The road up Wyman Canyon might be a better option, but it may also be closed. Call the Inyo NF to get the official word. If the front desk folks don't know tell them to ask Stan Overholt.

I've always gotten up to date road info for the white mountain area at the bishop ranger station.
