If you think killing a wild animal is the same as shooting your neighbors dog then you are really missing the point, and won't ever get it either. I am equating my morning commute with killing a game animal. This is not a noble beast... it's an animal. You're advocating a vegetarian lifestyle, which is fine for you, but just because others make different choices doesn't make them any worse than you. Kill and mountain lion, a bear, a deer, wild hogs, cattle at the slaughterhouse or chickens in a coup... it's all really the same thing.

As long as you include the neighbors dog and humans in that mix, very true....

i'm sure i will immediately regret posting in this thread....

a couple points:

it took 15 hours plus 8 hours to track this thing, with dogs and likely the most advanced hunting tech etc.
the mountain lion is a smart, elusive animal; apparently capturing one is no small feat(15+8hrs+dogs+tech).

i would say that hunting this animal is indeed a sport, one that i'm not familiar with, but def sounds like a challenge and prob a 23-hour rush blazing through the hills w amped-up dogs and a loaded gun in your hands chasing a huge cat that could kill you instantly if you slipped up.

SO:
- it appears to be a sport.
- the guy's a full-time hunting manager of a whole state, no surprise he likes hunting.
- it's clearly legal where he did it.

BUT:
- hunting mtn lions is banned in CA, voted twice, the only state in the western US - i assume this is a hot-button issue. Essentially he took sides on a hot-button issue; probably not the most diplomatic thing for this guy to do as an executive.

I watched the bighorn sheep get introduced to southern utah and protected until their numbers were plentiful - this was largely headed up by hunters. i have no problem with responsible hunters and hunting laws.

This is the America I know and love! Guns! Guns! Guns! Although it creates friction sometimes (as is obvious in this post) your second amendment sure keeps things interesting. Although we Canadians also hunt, the culture is much less pervasive. Our tendency to let our government run our lives can make things a tad dull north of the border - although if you look hard enough there are still a few rednecks to be found. They (the rednecks) just have to be much more cautious about their words and deeds or otherwise the liberals tend to tree them with dogs and shoot them for tacky photo ops.

I haven't seen a mountain lion yet (aside from one leaping up a 30 foot embankment while we were driving in SEKI at night), but I suspect they have seen me. It's been quiet for awhile, but reports of young ones being removed from backyards in residential neighborhoods and from areas adjacent to school grounds are common where I live. The fuss about it isn't big. BTW, the names given to the cougars in the research project are interesting. Obama and Etta jump out at me, along with some names from recent novels and from the The Lion King (my kids can finally stand the fear factor of that film, but aren't yet ready for The wizard of Oz, and especially not Deliverance.
