Hello, long time lurker here. I know this may not be the right place to post this but I saw all the posts on Mt. Tom earlier in the thread so what the heck. How would the road to Horton Lakes TH be for a Honda CRV? Tried to get up there a few years ago in an Odyssey and failed, so was wondering if a CRV is possible?

Edit: Will be coming up first week of July

I've gotten my Element to within 1/2 mile of the HL trailhead (nice campsite in the aspen there, frequented by hunters in the fall), but there were many spots where I just barely avoided bottoming out. Also plenty of sandy sections that might be dicey.

I think the CRV has more clearance than the Element right?

The place Laura, Ms. Buttercup, mentions is probably close to the end for a CRV. You might make it a little further. Last July my Landcruiser and a 4wd Dodge pick up were the only two at the gate/ trailhead. An Explorer was about 150 yards down the road and one other SUV where Laura mentioned. You can walk the last quarter of a mile about as fast as you can drive it.

A Tacoma can drive it pretty quick. A lot faster than I can hike.

Dana Couloir is in perfect climbing shape for soloing with one axe. Lovely day today!

Friend skied Dana couloir last Sunday, said it was great for skiing now as well.

Laurel is wet down in Mendenhall couloir. But after getting through chimneys I found a really nice rib to the east of the gully which went at about 5.6. Beautiful and exposed scrambling. Liked it more than North ridge of Conness.

Today did a really quick (4 hrs car to car) run up SE face of Emerson. Also a cool scramble. Chimney was dry, along with majority of that route. Made it back to the Bay in time to celebrate grandma's birthday.

Cool register entry.

Vitaliy, what camera are you using? Those are some really sharp/clear images.

Canon powershot ELPH 110 HS but I do not like this camera. There is even a better ELPH model (330) and Canon S110 is one I would rather have. Also a friend has Panasonic Lumix LX7 which takes much better pictures. We were taking pictures of same view and comparing, LX7 was much better.

Haha, V! I saw that Honnold entry last time I was up Emerson, though I'm not sure if it's real. I did not, however, see anything good on Laurel, in or out of the gully. It seems like a lot of people don't find whatever led you (and Croft) to call it "awesome."

Maggots.

I think my new favorite area is the Pine Creek drainage/etc. Pics from 5/31. Snow is spotty depending on exposure about 10,500 or so. Climbed to just over 12,000 on this little peak overlooking Royce lakes. Didn't have to walk on snow but for a few steps.

Stopped 200 feet from summit (12,200ish?) on this peak in the middle/right. Not sure the name of it. Exposed 4th class with a non-climber and no rope = call it a day.

start to the fun 4th across the notch from our stopping point

Image

I think this is Royce Peak in the background, unnamed peak on the left and right? If only a certain someone were still around to mis-ID them...he "knows" the area well enough.

Image

From our stopping point just before a notch/4th class finish. Merriam and the Royce lakes, I believe. Last picture is looking west-northwest from the same spot - crazy Israeli Scientist was impress.

On our way down, we ran into a man with interesting facial hair, smallish in stature, with a huge pack/fly fishing gear...could it be?!?!?!?

False alarm.

I haven't laughed that hard in a while. I think I'll show this to my OCB.

I went up Mt Ritter over the weekend. Here are some shots that should give you an idea of what that area looks like at the moment:

Looking north - Mt Davis at center, Lyell to the left:

Looking south - Cecile Lake

Question - what are the mountains in the distance in that shot?
EDIT: Answered - thanks, boyblue!

Mount Abbot, Bear Creek Spire, Mount Gabb:

Thanks.

QITNL and Burchy, awesome photos. Shows snow conditions up high really well.

Burchy those smaller peaks that are just before Royce lakes are Spire peak and Bearclaw spire peak as I remember. I have a SP page for one of them lol.
