Climbing is always good on Mt Shasta due to glaciers; the only problem sometimes is weather, winds above 100mil and avalanche hazard. :)
I’ll be coming back soon. :D

That is true. I just meant up Avi Gulch, since that is how most people head up.

That’s true too. But even on AG some people prefer no snow at all. I like Clear Creek with no snow, for one day attempts. :)

Man, don’t do this to me; she looks pretty! Unfortunately, I made different arrangements (which I regret) and cannot come this time. However, I’ll be coming soon again and again and again... I just don’t care about any other mountains but the Cascades. Well, I like beautiful lakes and hot springs in the Sierra too, but just to relax.

I'm planning to head up to Hidden Valley later this week. Could anyone advise whether bringing snowshoes would be a good idea for the approach hike?

We went up to Helen lake on 4/26 and did not need snowshoes at all. snow was firm, no post-holing anywhere.

On Saturday the slope leading to Hidden Valley was icy (very hard snow). Sanday was windy and cold. On Monday afternoon (a quite warm day) the snow was soft and we made good footsteps. Postholing on the way down in the gullies was very occasional. None of us used snowshoes.

If you go, update the conditions of the slope leading to Hidden Valley entrance please.

25-27 of April, 2015

There is quite a large amount of snow on Mt Shasta.

The Sierra Club cabin is partially covered. The water is running.

Crevasses on Whitney Glacier are quite covered (so many are hidden). The middle bergshrand is reasonably “safe” to cross in places. No rock falls yet (just a few).

There was a huge rockfall the other day on Mount Shasta. A huge boulder fell off of Casval Ridge and tumbled into Avalanche Gulch. The slide area and the rock's debris trail are visible to the naked eye from anywhere in town.

This is the second big alteration of the landscape around Mount Shasta lately. A few weeks ago the Sacramento River revealed that it had changed its course some time over the winter, wiping out some bridges on the Lake Siskiyou Trail in the process. Read about it here and here.
