Headed up there in a few days, just thought I'd check and see what the current conditions are like? I'm assuming snow won't be an issue (at least when doing the North Slope)..
Should I bring my ice axe & crampons?
Thanks!

Will do! I should be back on Monday the 30th…

Also just noticed this comment at the bottom of the Split Mountain page:

As of this date, no snow equipment is needed to comnplete this hike IF you plan on scrambling up the rocks to the right of the class 2 chute people often use to gain the ridge. The chute still has plenty of snow in it though.

How bad is the road up to the trailhead? Ive heard mixed information...specifically about getting scratches all on the side...is the vegetation really bad on the 4x4 road to reach the trailhead?

The road up was pretty rocky and high-clearance was necessary (we made it fine in an Outback). We did get some new scratches on the car, but you could probably avoid almost all of that if you drove more carefully...

Here are some pictures of the route above Red Lake -- we only made to right below the top of the crest as my partner had a disagreement with a boulder and twisted his ankle so we turned around.

No need for crampons if you're ok with easy scrambling on the rocks (just be careful of the loose ones!).
Also, the boulder fields & loose talus definitely made us move slower than expected so plan accordingly.

hey, i was thinking of possibly trying this one......how close can you park to red lake? How far a hike is it to get to that lake? Miles/time frame, etc. i did find a youtube video of some guys who did the north slope and it seems to be mostly loose talus all the way up, unless there is still some snow up there. Any info on this would be very helpful, thanks.

About 5 uphill miles to Red Lake from the trailhead.
