The cable back in 2003. I'd say it's somewhere between five-eighths and three-quarters of an inch in diameter.


I just called the ranger at the Park Service. She said the cables are one inch thick.

Heh. Well, maybe they changed and upgraded the cables since then (though I doubt it highly). Because if they haven't then my thumb in that photo is about 2 inches in diameter, and my closed fist almost six inches across! Makes me feel like a real ham-fisted giant. :) And here I thought I was just a tall skinny hiker dude...

I would highly doubt that any ranger you could get a hold of by phone would have an accurate idea. I'd bet she took a swag at it. If those cables had been 1" I don't think I'd have had the strength to lift them off the rock.
