Too quiet here so I found another UPO to post for identification. Lewis Clark photo from the 1936 High Trip. Scanned from 6x9cm negative.

Russell from Arctic Lake?

Indeed, nice view of the West face of Russell.

I don't think so, you can kind of make out the Fishhook Arete rising right-to-left below the skyline, and there's a pretty obvious cliff/headwall in the way from Iceberg. With these photos showing a bunch of light-colored rock and absolutely no plants, the area between Langley and Williamson is usually the best place to start looking.

Definitely not Iceberg. You can see the West chimney route on the left side of the W face, and the Mithril Dihedral on the right side of it. You can't see any of those from Iceberg. See the picture on p. 77 of Secor, second edition for something similar.

Only relying on google, I found this labeled "Leaving Artic Lake"

You did indeed find "harder." I'm guessing that's Mount Dana from somewhere north or northeast of Conness, but I'm not so familiar with that part of the Sierra. I hope you'll publish all these historic Sierra photos at some point, whether online or in print.

I stand corrected guys. Been a long time!

I think the 2nd mystery photo has got to be Banner Peak. It's got that huge snowfield on it. That's pretty unique.
And the left hand face, if you look real close, has a bit of a nose bump on it before it later down, drops off real vertical like.
Taken from an angle (but further away) similar to thousand Island lake.

That picture still bothers me.

BTW, anyone hear or know anything about Noondueler? He is one of my favorite contributors to SP. No activity since March 2017. ??? I hope he's alright.

I read through that older thread (thanks for that link).
But I still think it looks more similar to Banner.
For instance, the left side of Banner goes down to a broad, wide and fairly flat pass before rising again to the ridge.
That is not the case with Dana, which goes down to a 'notch' with a coloir below, then immediately rises again.

Seems to be similar to me, too... But, if that's Banner, then where's Ritter? Maybe hidden by that buttress in the foreground? Playing with GE, I couldn't find a location that matched Bearflag's photo.


Fact is that there are likely hundreds of Sierra Nevada peaks that have an abrupt drop off to the north and east with a relatively gentle drop to the west and south. This is a fun challenge!
