I want to know peoples thoughts. I personally think the people here have an idea of what an outdoor experience is and think that is the only way. Just take a look at the JMT speed record post. Let us discuss.

I'm not following you. What are you asking? What does the JMT thread or your statement about it have to do with the title?

You should actually start the discussion instead of asking everyone else too. Give us your thoughts. Do YOU think SP is dead?

I don't think so. But mrchad is pretty much correct. It's been a trend with many forums.

I don't know about dead, but it is tiresome to read someone's genuine inquiry about something like a climbing route on XX Peak that by the fifth post has transitioned to some off-topic garbage. It might only take a few more posts for this one to be a rant about asmz's (Alois's) analysis of a particular route's rating..........There are some very smart and credible participants on Summitpost and a few who detract from that value.

There are over 39 million people in California. Very few of them are even aware of SP's existence, much less it's current status. Maybe you should begin by clarifying your question?

I left the question a bit open ended on purpose. I am citing the thread as an example of people talking shit about what other people are doing or thinking. As for the rants people go on, I know for a fact that people would never talk to to each other in the manner which they do in person. It is very easy to hide behind the anonymity of the internet. I think that unwarranted comments by people discourage others from posting are why SP is dead. As far as asking everyone else to start the discussion, I believe my post was the start of the discussion. Besides, it isn't like anything else is going on in this forum. I miss the Chief and Moosey.

I'd say its just the evolution of the interwebs; some folks went over to supertaco(?), some went of Facebook, some went on other platforms/sites. I'd bet this average age of users on this site is older that other, newer climbing/outdoor sites, too, and the younger folks are the ones using the other platforms and not engaging with SP.org. People used to use disparraging comments towards others before the internet, but it was usually while passing around a bottle of alcohol and was referred to as 'trash-talking' or 'puffery'; just a lot of banter that, in the context in which it was used, was not harmful. You might say folks had thicker skins back then.

I think phydeux is pretty much spot on. I don't even know how many times I've heard, "Are you following us on Facebook?" The interwebs are a changin'... But one thing Summitpost DOES have over the typical social media posts is a vast array of detailed trip reports and route information, which in my opinion, is invaluable. Whenever I'm heading out somewhere I haven't been before, I'll always search through summitpost to see what others have encountered.

Personally, however, I don't think the CA summitpost thread is necessarily dead. Unless someone can point me in a direction of a social media group that can boast the content that summitpost contains with searchable options like what is found here... I'll be sticking around.

That said... the days of the Chief are truly missed.

I remember when the Chief posted something about an aid route he had done. Some guy innocently asked whether it was a 1 pitch climb (meaning one pitch long). The Chief, not being too bright, thought he was asking whether the route was only rated A1. He felt disrespected and posted a half-page obscenity-filled rant insulting the other guy every way he could.

He did pretty much the same thing to me when I said that my actual measurement of the steepness of a couloir was more accurate than the grossly inflated number he just made up. I don’t know how he became an expert on the size of my balls, but he seemed to think that had something to do with the accuracy of my measurements.

SummitPost is a great resource, and I use it all the time, but I don’t miss the Chief.

I met The Chief once, and in that instance he was nothing like the persona he often projected here. Helpful with information and a good sense of humor.
