New to Desolation

Hi guys,

Just relocated from LA to Sacramento and am excited to explore the northern stretch of the Sierra.

I'm trying to put together my first weekend in the Desolation Wilderness to incorporate a class 2-3 climb and fishing.

Can anyone recommend a good combination of basecamp lake and peak nearby? Currently thinking of Sylvia or Lyons lake and do Pyramid and Agassiz.

Curious about favorite lakes and climbs in general in the tahoe region too.

Thanks!

Sylvia puts both Pyramid and Agassiz in play. I also like the solitude of Lyons as many stop before the climb up at Sylvia

Sounds good, thanks!

Any reasonable alpine approaches from Aloha or one of the other larger lakes?

From Aloha Lake, you can hike north on trails to Mosquito Pass and follow the broad granite slope to Mt Price, then easy cross-country hike to Agassiz and traverse a sharp but mostly solid ridge to Pyramid. Or circle the lake from the south, bushwhack to Pyramid Lake, follow solid granite shelves to the east face of Pyramid, then scramble on large talus to Pyramid summit; from there you can traverse the ridge to Agassiz and Price. If you move reasonably fast, you can do this as a loop in either direction. Alternatively, from Mosquito Pass you can scramble up to Jack's Peak and traverse and easy ridge to Dick's. This side is volcanic rock, not granite, so it's loose.
