Boundary Peak, NV Highpoint Road Conditions

Looking to hike Boundary Peak in July or August. I have heard there are 2 routes you can take to get to the trail head and one has two variations. I drive a Honda Civic, which would be the best route for me to take to get to the trail head to avoid getting stuck?

I don't know about the east side, but the Queen Canyon road is pretty good until the Queen Canyon Mine. There is a nice flat spot there to park, after that the road gets pretty steep and rocky. I've seen a Honda CRV up at the saddle, but a Civic would get chewed up.

There are many forum threads that discuss the east vs west approach. You can use the search function above to find the old threads. Some of the trip reports might have photos and descriptions of the different routes.

We were there in July and approached from the East via Trail Canyon. We got within less than a mile or so to the trailhead in a Toyota Matrix which should be comparable to your Civic. We got a little bit past the little reservoir when the road was too bad for us to continue on; you would need a higher clearance there but 4WD would not be necessary. There were some spots on the side to park the car and even big enough to camp if needed. Some locals that we met the day before on White Mt. Peak had told us to use this approach since the Queen Mine road would be too rough for our little sedan.

I'm planning to try it again probably in August. 5 years ago, I tried it, from the East, and we got all the way to the trailhead in a mid-sized car. This time, I'll be in a compact, so I'm a little concerned. The main problem area that I saw was a very steep hill at one point, coming back afterwards. I don't want to be in there and not be able to get up the hill. We saw one other person signed in at the register for the previous few days, and it was early August. If you have a specific day that you're planning on going, please send me a message and let me know. Maybe we can plan to be there on the same day, and possibly even ride together. Strength in numbers.

I got up to the Queens Canyon Mine at about 8900 feet with a Nissan Versa. The road isn't great, but it is feasible for a Honda Civic. You probably can't get any higher than that with a civic, but that won't add too much to the hike; maybe another hour total round trip. The spot at 8900 feet is a great place to camp: http://www.summitpost.org/view_object.php?object_id=420907
