Pecos Wilderness January

Hi Everyone,

I’m going to be in Santa Fe and thinking of doing snowshoeing in Pecos starting from Aspen Basin for a few days.

Has anyone done snowshoeing with camping in January? I’m aware of the cold temperatures. I’m more wondering about any stream crossings, exposed areas etc. like things I should watch out for.

I’m not planning to summit(sorry), will mostly stay on trails. Maybe hike to some lakes and back. Out and back for a few days.

I've never camped out there, but I've seen others camping in tents and occasionally snow caves. The Windsor Trail to Santa Fe Baldy is a popular snowshoe, though you'll have to break trail if you go anywhere else. There are a couple stream crossings, but they're not a big deal. About the only exposure you'll find is the Skyline near Lake Peak.

Thank you seano. I don’t think I’ll be heading to lake peak. So, I should be ok.

Hi Everyone,

I safely made it and returned.

The camp site at the base of the ski resort is completely filled with snow and unless you were willing to spend a few hours making camp, it is almost impossible to camp there.

Winsor trail was pretty packed atleast till skyline cut out. Didn’t go past it.

Deception peak ridge trail was also in good condition.

Thanks for your replies and helping me make this trip.
