mud season? it's always mud season it seems. yikes!
no we did not get 1 peak! packed up and left sunday, rained all night saturday. my shoes were finished.
I think we will go back though this fall (with boots) and do the same thing... really nice area. I'd never been there until this weekend.

Isn't there a small backcountry campsite pretty high up on the way up to Wright / Algonquin? If my memory serves me well, I think it was fairly high up just before you get to the Wright side trail. Just below the dreaded 4,000 foot mark.

Might be worth looking into?

Catamount wrote:It is a nice area. From the second picture, it looks like you guys were right near Bradley Pond. Definitely worth a second visit. I've been back in there just twice ... hit all 3 summits in 1994 and climbed a different route to Santanoni and then Panther in 2010. Couchsachraga apparently translates to "dismal wilderness," but I kind of thought it was anything but dismal.

we camped at around 3200-3300ft, so above Bradley Pond.
wanted to get to Times Square but had no idea what to expect re: water. other than mud, the trail was not too terrible.

In case you are new to this area you need to know that August is a peak of dry season in Northern Hemisphere (except areas with monsoon climate).

Rain is not a proper excuse for not hiking in Adirondacks. It's not Southern California. :P

Thanks for the tips. I'm obviously new to the area and don't know shit from squat.
