but the coverage is less than ideal. (That model may also be offensive to US hockey fans.)

Does anyone have experience using umbrellas in the backcountry?

Does that come in red, white and blue with a rock shield?

Nope, but you can get a very lovely...hat.

I always take one on long (esp. multiday) hiking trips where I might have to hike in persistent rain. To me, wearing soaking raingear and goretex is depressing. I'd rather dress lightly and use the umbrella to keep dry. It also provides a "cone of warmth."

"Totally uncool" is a badge of honor as far as I'm concerned.

I'd agree. Sometimes it rains in Washington. If I was stationary and belaying, maybe, just maybe I'd want one. But when I'm actually on the move, no thanks. A little rain (even a lot of rain) isn't going to hurt me. I'll dry out.

Now that's an understatement :D

Hard to believe, isn't it?

It's OK. We're climbers.

Anybody tried the stupid-looking one that you wear on your head?

(This is not to say that carrying an umbrella doesn't also look stupid, but I think we can agree that the hat-brella looks even more stupid.)

Got pictures?

they are wicked for hiking below treeline or where there is little/no wind -- int he alpine I have found them usefull from time to time on still days, but for climbing I bring rainwear.

I used one walking into base camp on Aconcagua in the mid-1990s. (Rio Vacas-Polish Glacier route). I had a 3 ft length of sprinker pipe in my pack that I was using to hold tent poles, and the handle of the umbrella fit into it really nice. Other on the trip thought it looked strange, but agreed it was a great idea after hiking for three days from the road to Plaza Argentina in the heat. I've also used one here in Southern California (and the Sierra Nevada) by strapping it onto the frame of my external frame backpack.

Yeah, they suck for storms at altitiude - too much wind above treeline.
