What the hell ever happened to knickers? They were ideal for mountaineering. Pants are way too binding in the knees.

Knickers look stupid.

The last company to market them was Lowe/Latok. They made them from Schoeller stretch fabric (Keeler Kneelers) and also from goretex (Khumbu Salopettes.) Both of these were excellent designs; arguably better than any contemporary offerings from competitive companies.

Latok went bankrupt.

Patagonia, however, is still going strong.

Patagonia figured out that making clothes that look good is just as important as making clothes that perform well. There are not enough people willing to look like dorks to make knickers a viable design.

These days, stretch fabrics have reduced the advantages of knickers over long pants.

Personally, I don't give a damn how fashionable I look (or don't look) in the back country. Smatterofact, I think I only own one item with the label on the outside and that is my polar fleece.
