This is actually a good thing in Massachusetts because it give me a good excuse to run down all the darn liberals who are ruining the state.

"thats simple... a JEEP"

X2. I have a Jeep Cherokee with 230K on it and it still runs great. It only gets about 17 mpg and it'd be hard for you to sleep in but the 87+ 4.0's run forever. The 4wd is nice for getting to and back from remote trailheads in any weather. Lots of room for carrying mtn bikes, gear, etc. They are real inexpensive used. Look around and you still see them everywhere even though most are 10-20+ years old. Good luck.

haha, I wish I new where I was going to school! so many choices, I don't know what to do! anyway, I like the mechanic idea, it would be sweet to learn how to fix up a car. I wish I could take autoshop at my hs, but the prerequisites are bullshit, you have to take like 3 classes (powertech, cabinet making...) before you can actually take the class. is it easy to pick up how to make simple repairs? right now a early 90's civic looks pretty good, I'll just end up sleeping in the dirt, I can manage...

I figured you were driving to/from CA twice a year because of school (start of summer, end of summer). The first car I drove regularly was a '91 Civic. It was an automatic, but you had to let off the gas when it shifted, otherwise the car would start shaking. It held up through me and two younger siblings, though, and was passed on to cousins before it eventually met its end. At any rate, I would recommend you go with standard transmission, if you can - easier to maintain, you can push-start it, and it keeps your automatic-only friends from borrowing your car.

Don't dismiss a pickup truck, though. I was fortunate my friend had one, because there was no way my sedan was going to make it out there to serve as the toprope anchor:

6th Gen (1997-2002) Honda Accord V6.

My 1998 has 113,000 miles on it and still runs beautifully. Good cargo space. 17 gallon gas tank. Good gas mileage; it can't compete with a prius, but it does pretty well.

Only downside is that there isn't a CD player, but if you're gonna drive cross country, spend the $50 and get an ipod adapter that plugs into the cigarette lighter.

Buy a manual Civic, change the oil regularly and call it a day.

i once owned a 1986 honda accord hatchback that took me and three other friends and all their gear for Rainier from montana and back, and it had 250,000 miles on it at the time.

all i had to do was change the oil and repair the clutch (manual) for all those miles.
i traded it in in 2000 for 600 bucks and i swear i saw it driving around in the last five years.

now i own a honda element and love it!
