My 10.5 sized Koflach Degree is 13" or 33 cm. measured from the heel to the toe on the sole.

Aren't the 500's adjustable? Are you gonna ski in those with the Koflach's??? Ouch, that's not gonna be fun.

Fall a lot. Actually I have done quite a bit of approaches (and deproaches) in my Scarpa Invernos and Silveretta 400s. It is possible (even fun) to ski wide open slopes up to a certain angle (i.e. the approach to Camp Muir). In Alaska the combo is the way to go for most mountains. ) One trick that Colin Haley taught me is to attach a cord from the tip of the ski (easy if you have a hole there, otherwise you have to screw some type of attachment ring on) to a strap that goes around you leg just beneath the knee.

Here is a commerically made rig using the same principle: http://www.wildsnow.com/929/want-to-ski ... be-ticket/
