Hello,

Has anyone had good luck with repainting their aluminum ice axe shafts? I have wet sanded the shaft of my old Grivel down to bare aluminum and would like to repaint it. What is the best way to prep and prime the bare aluinum and what kind of paint and clear coat work the best? Any expectation of durability'?

TIA,

I thought there was some type of acid cleaning and etching/priming process that was necessary to get good adhesion.

Get it lightly sandblasted then do the paint deal. Did it on some older BD's and worked out great.

fine sandblast then powder coating for most durable finish on aluminum... shop boys use this on all our aluminum trusses........
