Actually, I was thinking about in comparison to the average leatherman, which is more like 8 ounces. In the desert, I'd rather have 6oz more water.

Common sense is not too common. I'm always amazed how heavy peoples' daypacks are. They may bring 2-lb cans of peanuts, full rolls of duct tape, heavy tripods... but they often forget 1st aid kits, knives, compasses, or even raincoats.
If you can find two items, both of which will be adequate to your needs and cost about the same, pick the lighter item.
