I've tried this and it is a terrible product. Not only did it fail at insulating, but the gel leaked out and got onto all of my gear. It started dissolving my clothing and even made some of my skin peel off.

I do not recommend it!

Interesting reply because this particular product isn't out yet so not sure how you tried it. Second, it has no gel. It uses aerogel blanket insulation. It's like a fabric. See http://www.aerogel.com I'm sorry you had a bad experience with a product but I can assure you it wasn't a coolzie or the type of aerogel insulation it uses. Please let us know what product you did use so we can avoid it.

How do you expect real feedback? You just joined SP today, you offer no image, location or any info about yourself whatsoever and then you put up a post with a link but no info about the product within your post. Goodluck.

Yes I joined today to be able to post to spread the word. I try to keep a low profile online, hence no profile. As for the product details, I should have included some and not just the link that contains all the info.

The product is an insulating sleeve that fits over water bottles, cans, etc.. it's made from aerogel blanket insulation and nylon fabric. Aerogel is amazing stuff and the blanket form is used in hiking insoles, sleeping pads, boots, and even tested in jackets on Everest. The coolzie helps keep the liquid in your bottle at the temperature you want.

I definitely used a coolzie, but never will again. That thing is toxic... and dangerous. Maybe if I wanted to ruin the life of someone I know I would buy one for them, but short of that I can't imagine any reason for this product.

Can you elaborate? Do you mean the Aeogel version specifically or all insulated water bottle cozies?

I kindly disagree that it was the product on the kickstarter page. Looks like there is another product called coolzie that does use a gel. Looks like we'll need a new name to avoid the confusion. Thanks for the heads up.

Now they are changing the name of this thing to try to run from its already horrid reputation. Well if that isn't a leading indicator I don't know what is.

It's just this one I have had bad experience with. I think they must have used some knockoff aerogel or something. It shouldn't lose form and composition like that! It's supposed to keep my bottle insulated and instead it sent me to the emergency room. And now I have to go though all this hassel with my hospital bills.

I think the product you used is this one, it uses a gel.

The product I posted the kickstarter link to is different. It's a shame they have the same name. THEY ARE NOT THE SAME product.

Have you taken a look at the links? Are you just going by the name?

thanks! i know i can always rely on sp to field check stuff before i have to make the same mistake. i will definitely not be using this product.

abehzadi, now that i think about it, i maybe would buy one if it came with the torch, though. do you have a torch option? because i need a torch.

Abehzadi, since you are an engineer, maybe the product would be helped by posting some quantitative results from the "field testing" -- e.g. measurements of the temperature of the drink, versus time, for your product and a control, at a few different ambient temperatures.

Years ago I made similar insulators out of closed cell foam. I found that a lot of heat loss was through the uninsulated top, so making a soft collar that would close up around the top was a significant consideration.

But more important, I found that I really didn't need such a product. I would freeze the water bottle the night before, put in the insulating sleeve, and it worked too well-- the drink would stay frozen all through the day. It was more useful to KEEP drinks from freezing in cold weather.
