Anti-Chafing products (a list and your input)

Hi folks,
I was researching anti-chafing products as an alternative to Bodyglide. Yikes! There's a lot of products out there. I thought a comprehensive list of anti-chafing products (by no means complete) might be useful and a research time-saver. Hopefully this list will be a little helpful. Note: I've included some of the better-known chamois creams as well (a specific bicycling category of anti-chafing). I have tried to include the company website as well as an outside review link (usually Amazon) where possible. If you have experience or recommendations on these or any other anti-chafing products missed (bad or good), please add your comments.

July 2015 Update:
Used Rocket Pure on the run and swim, haven't taken it up to IM/Ultra yet.
It's not bad. A little more "wetter" feel on the skin and (perhaps) less tenacious than BodyGlide or RunGuard.
The tea tree oil ingredient has a bit of a scent. Bottom line: I prefer RunGuard for the money.

That's quite a list. I've found that Vaseline and tight underwear (spandex) or bike pants to reduce things moving around works fine

I've used Band Aids or other adhesive bandages on my nipples when doing long runs, ever since a girlfriend freaked out about the pair of blood streaks on my shirt after a marathon training run (weird since she was a medical resident and I assumed would be used to the sight of blood). Tried Vaseline and Body Glide there on long runs and it rubbed off, though Body Glide works well for me in the crotch area. And no, I don't run in cotton shirts. For some reason I haven't had the bloody nipple problem on long hikes/climbs.

I use body glide. If you have big enough pectoral muscles, nipple probably won't chafe. Some tight clothes (notably underarmor) cling in bad places.

Damn! I knew I should have gotten those pectoral implants!

One of the most abrasive shirts I've used was a Nike syntheic sleeveless running shirt. It breathed well but salt crystals on the fibers from dried sweat made it feel like you were wearning chainmail after 10 +/- miles of running.

Never had nipple chaffing issues, but my between my butt cheeks tend to get raw. Regular Vaseline fixed that issue. Yes, I realize the doors that could open by me saying this. :)

I use Body Glide on my chest/nipples and soles of my feet. I've only had chafed/bloddy nipples from running, not hiking. For that nether region I've had success with Boudreaux's Butt Cream (basically zinc oxide diaper rash treatment). I've found Under Armor compression shorts fit oddly and cause some chafing in the crotch when hiking and climbing. I have not had this problem with my 2XU compression shorts.

Worst nipple day? A Champion C9 training shirt. It was great for hiking and backpacking but after 6 miles of Texas heat, wind, and sweat it felt like 60 grit sandpaper across my entire chest.

Brooks makes a very lightweight but tight fitting shirt ( I have both the long sleeve and short sleeve) that I love for long runs. Unfortunately I've bought them both on clearance.

I have to say as a woman I have had many a rant about sports bras. But, having never experienced the "bloody nipple" phenomenon, I have to say they are looking pretty awesome right now. Maybe that's why she freaked out, nipple chafing never would occur to 90% of women, sports bras are like 8 layers thick.

Ok, FWIW, after a few months of use I thought I would provide my two cents on five of these anti-chafe products. I would have liked to test more products, but the experiment started to get a little expensive as I was trying to balance short term acquisition cost with longer-term anticipated supply.
I tested all of them (except Bag Balm) for swimming, biking and running. My test was by no means scientific; just getting general impressions on use and effectiveness. I realize this info is pretty subjective, but hopefully this information may be useful to someone, somewhere at sometime.

Here's what I used:

Bodyglide (original)
http://www.amazon.com/BodyGlide-BGCB-Bo ... B005L8YVRO
RunGuard (original)
http://www.runguards.com/products/runguard-original
GoldBond Friction Defense
http://www.amazon.com/Gold-Bond-Frictio ... roduct_top
Bagbalm
http://www.amazon.com/Bag-Balm-Vermonts ... B0014CI4X8
Mission Five Hour Anti-chaf Cream
http://www.missionathletecare.com/colle ... hafe-cream

Initial Impressions:

Mission Five Hour Anti-chaf (MFHACC) seemed to work best as a cycling "chamois cream." It went on a little more oily than stick roll-ons of BG,RG and GBFD. Bodyglide and RunGuard seemed to be the most tenacious in terms of anti-chafing properties. It seemed like RunGuard was just slightly less tenacious than BodyGlide. However, RunGuard is an all natural product without any "chemicals." For those concerned about ingredients, RunGuard may be the better choice. Runguard is also a small company based in Ann Arbor, Michigan for those that like to support small companies. Goldbond Friction was cheaper in price ($1-$2 cheaper on average than BG or RG). For those price sensitive, GBFD may be the best value. It also seems to be carried by the big retail drugstore chains, so this may be a good option for the road trip or last minute pickup. Bagbalm: I'm not going to recommend this as a go-to anti-chaf. I was sensitive to the smell. Others suggested that it had an "autoshop" smell to it (must be due to a petroleum-based ingredient). Folks in the various reviews seemed to rave about it. Me? I'll use it for chapped skin until the supply is used up.
Mission Five Hour felt the most greasy on the skin compared to BG/RG/GBFD. I ended up using MFHAAC mostly as a chamois cream because of the feel. It worked fine. For those that prefer a thicker application residue and don't mind getting the stuff on your hand, then MFHACC is recommended. Oddly, I MFHACC came across my radar as it was the only anti-chaf product I could find in Jackson Hole during a road-trip stop. Maybe I just wasn't looking hard enough?

to summarize:
Brand/ Delivery/ Skin Feel/ Anti Chafing Tenacity/
Bodyglide (original)/ stick/roll-on balm/ smoother/ Very Good/
RunGuard (original)/ stick/roll-on balm/ smoother/ Very Good/
GoldBond Friction Def/stick/roll-on balm/ smoother/ Good+/
Bagbalm/ /ointment/ salve greasy/ OK/
Mission Five Hour/ cream/ greasy/creamy/ Good+/

Brand/ /Ease of Wash Off w/ soap /Best Use/ Pool Use-Lap Swim/ Scent/
Bodyglide (original)/ a little harder/ All Around/ Stays on/ none/
RunGuard (original)/ a little harder/ All Around/ Stays on/ none/
GoldBond Friction Def /Easier/ All Around/ Stays on/ none/
Bagbalm/ Easy-Absorbs into skin/ post chafe-dry skin/ didn't test/ slightly smelly/
Mission Five Hour ACC/ a little harder/ cycle chamois/ Stays on/ none/

Final thoughts:
I'll be using BG/RG and Goldbond going forward.
First preference is RunGuard due to it's all natural ingredients
Second preference is GoldBond FD due to the lower price and apparent wider retail availability
Third preference: Bodyglide

Hey, let's "run gently" out there.. :D
