Hi Guys and Gals,

Was thinking of getting a BMX style helmet to wear scrambling where there is no danger of falling debris from above.

What do you think?

Looking at climbing helmets, all are more like armour for sharp impacts but not a lot for banging your nuggin on a rock falling over.

Apologises if this has been done before or if ive missed something important.

Do you mean a full face helmet? Most bmx helmets come down about as far as rock-climbing helmets. You should be very wary of sight restriction and catching a full-face helmet on a rock or rope.

Much of the protection of rock-climbing helmets is for head impacts with the wall, during pendulum swings, inversions and so on.

If it is really scrambling, why do you need a helmet?

If you've already got something that you think might do that's one thing, but why go out and buy something for a different sport?

There are definitely some "scrambling" routes (class 3 or even class 2) where the danger of rockfall is serious enough to warrant a helmet -- normal route up middle palisade, for example. But that's protection from falling rocks, which doesn't seem to be the OP's concern.

Looking a bit deeper into it a BMX bowl helmet is actually hugely bulky and helmets like Grivel salamander actually has all round padding for falling.

Think a Grivel helmet is a good shout? My only concern is slippery rock mountaineering.

you want something nice and light. the Petzel Meteor III is a great choice.
