Good, Cheap General Mountaineering Boot

Hey all,

I'm broke and in need of a mountaineering boot! Nothing extreme--just planning on doing three-season mountaineering with it on slopes no greater than 40-45 degrees. Think something like Avy Gulch on Shasta or the Mountaineers Route on Whitney.

Any suggestions? My budget is around 250 (which really includes things up to almost 400 that I can find on Steep and Cheap).

Thanks!

Sierratradingpost has numerous options, all at low prices:

LaSportiva tend to fit narrow feet:

Scarpa tend to fit wider feet:

Kayland tends to fit between the other two brands:

FWIW, I either currently, or have in the past, owned boots and rock shoes from each of these manufacturers and they are all top quality.

Genie,
Just a thought...
If you miss all those sales on general mountaineering boots, also consider the Bundeswehr mountain alpine boot made by Haix. It gets good reviews and you may be able to find a pair cheap.

They may not take a step-in crampon, but they should take a strap-on crampon for sure.
If you shop around, can find them a lot cheaper on other websites. Be sure to get the Alpine boot version.

Just a helpful tip for gear-buying in general: I save a little $ by using browser coupons like Ebates. And if you can find them, you can buy discounted gift cards to places like REI or Dick's sporting goods (e.g. a $50 gift card for $40). Every penny counts!
