Hi!

My girlfriend and I usually go backpacking together, so carrying 2 sleeping bags and pads seems like a waste of space/weight. I have been considering getting a 2 person sleeping bag and pad.

Sleeping bag: I cannot seem to find anything good for two people. The best option seems to be https://www.bigagnes.com/King-Solomon-1 ... BLE-WIDE_2. However, it is only 600 fill Down, and doesn't seem to save much over our regular sleeping bags (Marmot Plasma 15 & Marmot Celestrum).

Sleeping pad: Looking at XPED SYNMAT HL DUO (https://www.mec.ca/en/product/5052-839/ ... eeping-Pad). It looks pretty good, but ideally the R-value would be slightly more than 3.3 if we want to be able to use it on snow.

Is anybody using a 2-person sleeping system and can provide some feedback?

Zpacks makes a twin quilt with 900 fill down that comes in a variety of lengths, widths, and temperature ratings.

I have been married for 24+ years and we always share a sleeping bag. Most of the time we simply unzip a regular sleeping bag and use it as a blanket. It's just as warm as taking two sleeping bags.

If you don't want to do that, simply get two sleeping bags with opposing zippers and zip them together. This works great too, but does not save any weight, so we have only done that car camping. Otherwise, we always share one sleeping bag.

Scott, how do you deal with the sleeping bag getting pulled around and air coming in when you twist? For us, if I use an unzipped single sleeping bag, it is ok when we just go to bed and everything is tucked under the mat, but as soon as we make any small movement everything comes undone.
Also, which pad(s) do you use?

No, my wife hates the idea of a double bag because of the loss of freedom of movement. I'm not sure how much I'd like it either. Also, I fart a lot.

Zipping two bags together works okay if the zippers are opposite. But it isn't as good as dedicated twin bag or quilt because there will be a big gap between your heads. You really want your own head opening if it's cold. If it's not that cold a big rectangular quilt would work just like at home.

I've never seen a double wide pad. Two ensolite pads would sit still next to each other but modern inflatable pads will shift around. On top of that many pads aren't rectangular.

Zpacks sells special "pad straps" to hold two pads next to each other. You could rig something similar on your own.

Unless we have a tiny sleeping bag, we haven't had a problem. We do tend to sleep pretty close and snuggled up though.

Look up the Feathered Friends Web site. They carry at least two different temperature ratings of two person sleeping systems.

A friend of mine had one of those bags. Used it for bivi on big walls and he really loved the system. I slept in it only once. The set up was extremely light for two people, basically half the weight of separate bags.

Exped makes several inflatable, synthetic fill double wide pads. The lightest one is about 2lbs.
