I wouldn't call it new age as the Native Americans were running that way many moons ago. I was taught it by Tom Brown, "The Tracker", when I took training with him in the 80s. He called it fox running. Cheers!

"New age" to me. I never heard of it. I guess my track coach in high school was a joke!

Anyone else go to Big Sur last weekend?

I'm a slow old guy, but still had a blast. :D

I ran Big Sur this year. The course with its endless hills kicked my ass. I ran it in 4:12:16, which I was very happy with.

Thanks for the advice. Been running on my toes for about three weeks now. I think I'm finally getting used to it. My knees feel great too. Now I gotta figure out what to do about the blister on my toe.

Awesome Mike! I'm glad it's working for you despite your past knee problems.

Sorry, I can't help you with the blister. I haven't solved that one for myself yet.

Big Sur was my first Marathon...and probably best marathon memory as well...beats the hell out of Boston or any other in my opinion....oh wait...did I just say something positive about Calif? Disregard that previous statement.

Hey mrw - that's terrific, great time (most anywhere else that would be a sub-four hour run).

Dow - being a newbie marathoner I only have one other to compare it to; the Death Valley marathon. Now there's some stark contrast.

Last ran Big Sur in '05. I plan to return next year. After looking at your video seems there's more musicians out on the course than i remember.

I did Big Sur in 2002 as my first marathon - ran a 3:48. I was afraid of Hurricane Hill but the really tough part was the rolling hills in the Carmel Highlands, starting at mile 18 or so. What really made it nice was staying at the Ventana Inn the night before - I got to sleep until 6AM since it's near the starting line, and got to soak in a hot tub afterwards! A question to those who ran it - who has replaced the grand piano player on the top of Hurricane? I heard he died a couple years ago. The piano was a nice touch, especially as the start of the hill had Japanese tako drummers pounding out an ominous beat!

bird wrote:So I've cut back my running dramatically over the past year. I do a 3-4 mile run every week or two, I incorporate a bit of running into HIIT training routines one or two days a week, usually about a mile of total distance, and I do 1 or 2 short interval workouts each week. I've had no knee problems, and recently set a 5K PR. My previous PR I was running 3-4 days a week 3-5 miles each time. So I've cut my mileage by more than 50% and increased performance. Gotta love it!

Did you change your technique too? Were you a heal-toe runner and have you fixed that? Are you trying to follow the POSE method?

what is the deal with these spring loaded runners?...suppose to give marathon distance an advantage... does anybody have a pair? do they really improve time? where were these when I was younger? how about some wheels on the bottom too.

Not very consistantly lately, but yes. Last marathon was Seattle 2007. Not even going to say what my time was. I'm slow.

Thinking about registering for Death Valley this December. I've done the half there twice and the Titus Canyon mary. Titus Cyn was a blast.

Longest distance I've completed was the Wild Wild West 50k. Although it turned into a hike after mile 24 when I was asked to escort a woman who'd got onto the 50k extension from the marathon course...she wasn't really trained for that distance under the conditions either.

I've been running off and on for a couple of years. Mostly in the 10 k range.

The problem is I'm very prone to injuries :(

I quickly get the dreaded shinsplits and right now I'm having problems with the patella tendon that connects the kneecap with the side of the knee.

I've been treating it with ice packs, which seems to help.

I swim to stay in shape, 2.5 k, 3 times a week, but it's not the same as running...
