High Altitude Pulmonary Edema - research participants needed

I have a new research study just starting in the fall and I need subjects aged 19-45 who have had HAPE diagnosed by a physician. At this point I am just recruiting the HAPE-suceptible (the people who have been to altitude without getting sick are easy to find).

Volunteers needed for high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) research study


We are seeking volunteers for a research study aimed to improve our understanding of high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE). HAPE is a condition where the lungs fill with fluid upon ascent to high altitude. The study will involve magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the lungs and will also involve short periods of breathing low levels of oxygen similar to being at high altitude. We are looking for volunteer research participants between 18 and 45 years old who have had HAPE, previously diagnosed by a Doctor. We are also seeking volunteers who have been to high altitude, but have never experienced any altitude related illness.

What volunteers will do in the study: There will be two parts to the study. The first part lasts approximately 45 minutes and will involve a medical examination to ensure you qualify for the study and some tests of your lung function. In the second part, which will last about 4 hours divided into two 2 hour sessions, you will breathe air from a mask while MRI images of your lungs are obtained. You will also be asked to briefly inhale and exhale different gas mixtures including 100% Oxygen and 12.5% Oxygen (equivalent to being at 12,500 ft).

The study will take place in San Diego, Ca and will be run by researchers from the University of San Diego Medical Center and the University of Washington Medical Center.

Ah may help if you mention that the study is to take place in San Diego at the beginning. I have had HAPE as diagnosed by a physician but you are a little out of my neck of the woods.

Sorry - I should also state that we will reimburse travel expenses, and reimburse or provide accommodations if your interested in a trip to the area. Prime time for J- tree...
Also there is separate stipend for participation.

Two questions: What is the research definition of "high altitude"? and why the 45year cutoff?

No strict definition of altitude to diagnose HAPE, but it must happen upon ascent. Can happen as low as 8,000 ft with rapid ascent from see level. In our study we will simulate 12,500 ft for less than 30 minutes (not enough time to actually cause HAPE).

The 45 yr cutoff is simply because you have to get these things approved by a review board, and they can be a bit on the conservative side i.e.. assume anyone over 50 who you ask to exercise will have a heart attack. At some point we may be able to increase they age limit.

Is this study still going on? And have you begun recruiting non-HAPE susceptible individuals into your study? Id be interested in knowing more about it. How long do you expect the study to be, and what is your goal sample size?

Do you have a clinical trials.gov identifier number yet?

I recently completed my Masters Thesis at Yale University School of Medicine on Acetazolamide Prophylaxis for high altitude pulmonary edema in HAPE susceptible individuals, so this is an area of interest to me.
