I had an mri done last year and had ringing in my ears the very next day. It was constant but at times I wouldn't notice it if there was other noise in the room (t.v., radio, conversation, etc). About a month later, I was placed on a prescription of methadone for chronic forefoot nerve pain. Methadone is said to be one of the few opiates that can help with that.

Well, unfortunately the pain is something I still am wrestling with but the tinnitus went away within a month. I don't know if it's gone because of the methadone but it might be worth a try. It wasn't a particularly high dose I was on, about 30mg a day. One thing you should do when taking the methadone is load up on fiber. The stuff will bind you up like nothing I've experienced before.

Hope this helps and please let us know if it does. By sharing what works, we can all live a better life. Best of health to everyone.

I've recently experienced high-frequency tinnitus, and I'm wondering whether this so-called "smart meter" installed by San Diego Gas & Electric has anything to do with it. I read that the meter can interfere with electronic devices, and perhaps create high-frequency noise? Seriously, I'm no tweaker or crackerhead, I'm wondering if anybody else has noticed such an increase in high-frequency noise or high-pitched ringing with the advent or installation of a "smart meter?" I'm about ready to take a sledgehammer to that p.o.s., I already tried moving electronic devices further away from the meter, and I've also pulled some serious ear wax removal. I suppose my next step will be to pay the flat rate to get rid of that freakin' meter, I can't help suspecting it of somehow bringing on this tinnitus, since the tinnitus seemed to develop shortly after the meter was swapped out.

I might add that I punctured an eardrum as a kid, diving sideways into some bushes. I also had a pretty bad bilateral ear infection down in the jungle in Panama, due to crossing dirty rivers and streams in "Jungle Training." On top of all that, I have a long history of shooting firearms, though I've used ear protection most of the time... I also have a long history of cranking music on old school headphones, the good kind back in the day, so maybe that's catching up to me. However, the timing of this tinnitus development has me wondering about the safety of these so-called "smart meters." My hearing has always been good, despite everything I mentioned above, it just seems like this tinnitus sprang up AFTER the meter was swapped by SDG&E, and I've noticed what seems like more high-frequency noise from the TV in the living room, which is closest to the meter.

Has anyone else here experienced this sort of development following the installation of a "smart meter" by the utility company? If so, I'd like to hear your story... it shouldn't be long before I move to the country, but meanwhile I'm wondering if it's worth it to pay the flat rate for the older-style meter, the one that was on there before. Might be worth the $75 per month to save my hearing from permanent damage, if that "smart meter" is indeed the culprit. Having said all this, I should add that I live between two military installations, and as a result my ears are probably bombarded by high-frequency signals all day & night... another reason I'll be glad to leave this seaside ghetto, aye? Seems like it's getting harder and harder to find peace and tranquillity in this Brave New World, which is why I really enjoy places like the Salton Sea---the silence there is deafening, LOL.

Thanks for telling me about methadone making your tinnitus go away. I just googled "methadone tinnitus" and all I saw was reports of methadone potentially causing tinnitus. In any case, I don't want to get myself addicted to something like methadone.

No abnormality was noted and the pain is almost gone but I was exposed to the loud noise of the MRI machine for 1.5 hours. Headphones were given to me but these did not seem to lower the noise at all. I noted ringing in my ears (Tinnitus) as soon as I got out of the machine. To this day (October 31), ringing has not changed. I saw an Ear Nose Throat specialist and read about Tinnitus. There is no specific treatment.

Am I destined to live like this for the rest of my life? This is driving me crazy.

I'm an anesthesiologist and anytime I sedate a patient in the MRI we place industrial quality ear plugs in the patient and document it. I'm not sure how they compare to the head phones? I wear ear plugs when even briefly entering the MRI for fear of hearing damage. Our ear plugs do muffle the MRI noise significantly. The ear plugs are 'the standard of care' at our facility, but I cannot say they are standard everywhere. Standard of care is not universal. :?

Thank you deathzonescience,

I was not given ear plugs and now will have to live with tinnitus for the rest of my life.

Hi Nader,

I had the same thing happen to me in January this year in the UK. It was a 3t MRI, lousy headphones and no earplugs. I've had raging tinnitus since, which has been getting worse. How have you been getting on? Any recovery at all?

Not MRI-related, but I did get tinnitus as the result of an ear/head injury about a year ago. It took 6 months to get to the point where there was any time of the day where I had some peace and quiet, and 12 months later there are now whole days, sometimes a week without a flare-up. Still extremely irritating, but it's been a comfort to know that continued recovery is still possible.

Hi Nader,
I saw your post. Did the ear ringing go away? Or are you still hearing it?

Hi everyone I have tinnitus from a 1.5 Tesla MRI test immediately after I was pull from the machine. The loud noise from the machine cause a electric static loud ringing in my ears. It's been 2 years and I still have the same ringing issue. I never had any medical issues. A doctor ordered the test to see if I had any issues with my head because I complained about breathing. The test came back normal. Also there where many other test done and they all came back normal. I can say for sure before I entered the MRI machine I never heard ringing in my ears in my entire life. Now i'm on a mission to find a way to get rid of the ringing out of my ears. If anyone who has successfully got rid of the ringing or found a solution to lower the ringing please message me as soon as possible. We should all work together to find a solution.
