Hey folks,

I am a few months away from embarking on a year-long climbing adventure and I need to lock down some solid medical and rescue insurance. Money isn't a huge issue, but I was hoping there was a company that would combine the two insurance types to save me some cash. Does anyone know which insurance companies bundle these two insurance types and who has the best coverage? I will be leaving my job in a couple months and will then obviously not have insurance, so this would in no way be supplemental. Thanks guys, really appreciate your help.

I'm assuming you're in the US, since I don't know of any other country where health insurance is dependent on one's place of employment.

Just to keep in mind as a fall-back option, you're entitled under the COBRA law to continue (up to 18 months, longer if you're disabled) the health insurance you currently have through your employer, though you will have to pay full price. This is usually not your most economical option - if your state has a "health insurance exchange', you can usually find a cheaper plan there.

Yes, I'm in the US. I'll be sure to check into my options under COBRA, as I've heard it isn't a terrible option when faced with no health insurance. If I pursued the COBRA option I'd need to buy rescue insurance separately and wouldn't mind doing so if it were remotely economical. Does anyone know of any existing combined rescue and medical bundle plans?

Re the question about American Alpine Club rescue insurance. Yes, it is offered to all AAC members and applies to climbing and trekking. It might be exactly what the OP needs. Unfortunately, one needs to be AAC member as the insurance comes with the membership.

The membership cost is $75 for regular member and $45 for student. It includes (among many other things) the insurance. Text below is from the AAC.

"Accidents happen. As backcountry users, it is our responsibility to be prepared and also to have a backup plan. AAC membership automatically enrolls you for $12,500 of rescue coverage in case things go wrong climbing, hiking, backcountry skiing, mountain biking, and more—any human-powered, land-based activity beyond the trailhead is covered. Simply joining the AAC helps make this $12,500 lifeline possible for you and your fellow members".

I have never used it (been member for 32 years) but I know couple people who did. It not only saved their hides, but saved them quite a bit of money...
