I recently had a pretty cool encounter with a mountain lion. I just topped out atop a ridgeline when I saw four mulies running out of the corner of my right eye....a second later I spotted a mountain lion running from my left flank maybe 60 yards away.
I don't want to sound too presumptuous, but I think it was probably stalking the mulies and I totally spoiled its effort. I sure am glad it didn't get made at me....at least thats what I kept nervously saying to myself as I finished the hike with my eyes checking for anything behind me.

God help you if you ever run into any of
these creatures while hiking...
Here's a sample. (It's not a joke. They're real...)

I love animals and all, but that aye-aye is hideous. Really.

Some folks from New Orleans claim that the swamp-people (Louisiana folks who don't live near New Orleans, apparently) enjoy nutria (beaver-rats, really ~ or 'nutra rats' as locals call them) as a regular part of their diet. So when I was down there in December, I asked around everywhere for some I could try. The New Orleans folks thought I was crazy, and even the swamp-people gave me funny looks.
You name it

Lately, banana slugs have been the most common wildlife I've seen while hiking. However, I did see a fox the other day when I was driving to work.
