Alex you are setting one blistering pace. Personally I am going the Alpinist route and trying to finish by 50 years old so that gives me a little over 20 years to finish. But hopefully that'll keep me in decent shape for that period.

Psst - I didn't start until 2001...

Haha I meant end date only not pace. I may finish earlier but leaving room for major life events.
2008 - 3hps
2009 - 1hp
2010 - 7hps
2011 - 1hp completed 10 more planned

But in general I like having things to look forward to so not huge rush

Quick question: planning to travel to Chicago next weekend so wanted to bag WI and MI hps.

Can I drive a FWD rental sedan to get to MI highpoint? I have downloaded the directions but have read some comments regarding the road condition...

I remember the road being bad after a certain point. I wouldn't take anything up after that. I'm sure people have gotten a jeep up there. Do you really want to risk messing up the rental? It's a short walk. You can drive up to a certain point, and then just walk the rest.

Thanks TLP, I was thinking the same park at the area where it is blocked...

Hopefully I will find the HP without problems and I will draw a map afterwards.

Wisconsin and the UP has received a lot of rain lately and we expect much more this week. Be prepared to hike to Mount Arvon if the logging roads are muddy. Expect mosquitoes and deer flies as well. We parked by the gravel pit and cross country skied to the MI highpoint on New Years Eve in 2005. No mosquitoes! 11 miles round trip.

I will be heading to Katahdin in Maine next week for Highpoint #47.

Good luck on Katahdin as the weather changes rapidly...I've been up twice and both with pretty much 0 visibility.

I recommend going up via Taylor trail, knife's edge and going down via Saddle trail

Good luck on Katahdin. Fond memories up there. One neat way to climb is to shuttle cars or hitchhike and go up through Chimney Pond (Cathedral is awesome) and down the other side via Abol or Hunt. Gives you perspective from both sides of the mountain. Within the park folks are very accommodating to give others rides (at least in my dated experience).

I'll be on Borah Pk. in mid- August with my climbing buddy Steve for #26. Can't wait!

Well it's not exactly a trip report, but here are some images from my Denali Prep class on Rainier last month. It was way too windy so we weren't able to make the summit. Class was great though, trip was awesome. Can't wait to go back!

Along with the climb, I took the opportunity to carve a wedding proposal into the snow above Camp Muir:

My now fiancee was not on the climb with me, but was in Seattle. I surprised her with the image and a ring on the flight back to Philly. We were looking through my pictures and - bang! - there was the proposal. I had gotten the plane crew in on it - the captain made an annoumcement, the plane cheered, and the crew brought us some wine and cake.

Since I carved the proposal at 10,200', and I actually popped the question at 30,000...does that mean I proposed at 40,200'?

While I didn't drive up to Mt. Arvon, I did drive to Charles Mound when I was in Chicago last weekend... here is what I encountered (I was aware of the opening times...)

A lot of toll booth on I-90...

I hated the Crown Vic... which is an upgrade from Thrifty...

It was not hard to find at all, you don't have to go all the way to Scales Mound, just put it in your GPS and follow...

It was the hilliest area I have ever been - if you drive fast you will airborne

The nearby Apple River State Park was just ok, nothing special.

Eric, congratulations! When's the big date? BTW, when's Hotoven getting married? Haven't heard much from him lately.

Mount Katahdin, United States Highpoint #47 for me. I had perfect weather and great views on the Abol Slide Trail. Great scramble and a lot of fun.
