I made it up the E Butress of Whitney in 4 minutes much the same way...
...I can see them flaming me on the Portal site for that comment now!

Our coyotes in NV are a little more mangy looking...but definitely a coyote.

Well there was this time I was approaching the finish line of the Death Valley-Borax marathon when a Coyote casually strolled across the street in front of me....

In Idaho, we seem to have some cross breeding going on with some young Male Wolves and some semi reluctant Coyote Females, hence a animal that resembles the US Southeastern "Red Wolf". Other names are a Coydog or Coywolf. I have heard of reports coming from Cali as well, now this picture really is a coyote but start paying attention, you may happen onto this hybrid pooch. In fact here is a possible sighting picture (In California) and the thread that was discussed:

I think the best field mark (easy to see at a glance from many angles) is the relative size of the ears. Coyote: large ears with about an ear's width, or less, between them. On a wolf the ears are small and have a bigger gap between them.
