I guess I wasn't thinking about how far a helicopter would have to go to get to a spot, but rather a combination of distance and difficulty for a hiker. I've been to Milestone Bowl and it is remote indeed, but the area I mentioned felt far more removed from the rest of the state. In terms of what is quantifiable, I would have to agree with asmrz and Bob.

I wonder if California has any unvisited hidden slot canyons similar to the recently explored Vahalla in Oregon ? Maybe everyplace has not been seen .

Not in the States but Torngat National Park in Labrador is 420 miles from the nearest road. No trail to get there either it would be 420 miles of overland bushwhacking from Northwest River or the Caniapiscau Reservoir. Those two places are both about 420 miles away overland as the crow flies and are as close as you can get by road. This is probably a candidate for as far you can get from a road on continental mainland outside of Antarctica. Gets a whopping average of 15 visitors a year. Usually via helicopter/ship approach.

The only place in continental North America where you visit glaciers that are east of the Rockies.





Nunavut may have somewhere more remote as it is 2.1 million km^2 with no road network at all. Would take some more research to figure it out.

Glaciers east of the Rockies? South of the 60 th latitude I assume is what you mean. There are many glaciers and Icefields in the eastern arctic.

There are many in the eastern arctic as you said but the only ones not on an island (which is what I meant when referring to "continental" - should have said mainland) are in Torngat. Most of Torngat is south of 60 but a very small part on the mainland extends just north of 60 in this range.

Maybe some of the Amazon would rival this, but you can travel the rivers by boat.

Although they aren't remote as the crow flies from the nearest road as places in the Sierra, there are many places in the Ventana Wilderness in California that are very hard to get to because the terrain is so steep and rugged, there are no trails, and the underbrush is a serious obstacle to travel off trail. From the point of view of time required to get there by land vehicle and/or on foot, they are extremely remote.

I've been to some places that very few other humans have seen, but they are underwater (e.g., Cordell Bank Marine Sanctuary in CA, some deep shipwrecks in New England when I lived there, and some underwater caves in FL). There are still lots of underwater sites that have seen fewer human visitors than have been on the moon - but I suppose this is the wrong forum for that.
